How to Use Quotation Marks With Other Punctuations

Quotation marks are among the most confusing punctuations to use, as so much writing out there don’t follow proper convention. It is one of the most common punctuation marks that are being confused by a lot of people. Seriously, randomly pull out any ten essays submitted in class and you’ll find how badly the uses of quotations with other punctuations vary.

A quotation mark is always use together with its pair. Some would often call it as double quote and other would call it as an inverted comma. However, the uses of quotation marks are not being practiced by a lot of people, usually students. Common mistakes that this punctuation mark is often use is when someone is going to write an essay. Since essay is a free writing, quotation marks are always present in this piece.

Quotation marks can be single or double but the pair should always be with its corresponding pair. Like for example, you cannot use an opening quotation mark with single quotation mark and ends with double or vice versa. Open double is always paired to a close double quotation mark, same as with single quotation mark.

What’s funny is, the rules for this are quite simple. It’s just that most people don’t pay that much attention to it, treating it like its secondary in importance to other facets of good writing. Basically, the following are the prescribed rules on using quotes with other punctuation marks.

o With commas, always put them inside quotation marks, as in: “This,” according to the governor….

o With periods, always put them inside quotation marks, as in: The story, publisher Harper claims, is “the author’s most poignant piece of work.”

o With semicolons, always put them outside the quotation marks, as in: They called him “Butch”; as such…

o With colons, always put them outside the quotation marks.

o With question marks and exclamation points, put them inside if they is part of the text being quoted; otherwise, keep them outside.

We only use double quotation marks to enclose a quote, titles and to words or phrases that are slang and irony. There are times that within a quote that was enclose with double quotation marks, single quotation marks are also present. It is like you are using words or phrases inside a quote. Just bear in mind that within a quote, you can use either double in a single quote or single in a double quote.

There is no need to confuse yourself more on which quotation mark would you rather use, either a single (‘ ‘) or a double (” “), as long as you had use it in the proper way as mention a while ago as to when we are going to use quotation marks.

Just bear in mind that within a quote, you can use either double in a single quote or single in a double quote.

The above five rules are the only guidelines you need to remember for using quotation marks with other punctuations. Sure, there may be some exceptions, but they will be rare. Of course, you can always just use a grammar checking software to identify punctuation transgressions, saving yourself plenty of time in the process.

Impact Of Employee Empowerment On Talent Retention

Impact Of Employee Empowerment On Talent Retention

Introduction:

An empowered organization is one in which individuals have the knowledge, skill, desire, and opportunity to personality succeed in a way that leads to collective organizational success.

An organization’s human resource is its most valuable asset. The employees are the repository of knowledge, skills and abilities that can’t be imitated by the competitors. Technologies, products and processes are easily imitated by the competitors; however at the end of the day, employees are the most strategic resource of the company.

Generally, people are a firm’s most underutilized resource. And that is why management tries to empower the employees. But employees often are afraid of taking this responsibility. They fear that additional work pressure that they will have to bear as a part of being empowered. Besides, they also fear being held accountable for the decisions they make.

Empowered refers to enlargement of the employees job responsibility by giving him the authority of decision making about his own job without approval of his immediate supervisor. Empowerment is the degree of responsibility and authority given to an employee. By empowerment, the employees are supported and encouraged to utilize their skills, abilities and creativity by accepting accountability for their work. Empowerment occurs when employees are adequately trained, provided with all the relevant information and the best possible tools, fully involved in key decisions and are fairly rewarded.

Employee empowerment entails identifying how much responsibility and authority an individual can effectively handle without becoming over burdened or distressed. Empowerment includes supervisors and employees working together to establish clear goals and expectations within agreed upon boundaries.

Psychological Empowerment:

The strategy of empowerment is not only attempting to extend the arguments of the excellence movement but also in seeking to solve the problems of alienation. Strategies of empowerment may include redefining the nature supervision of management, rewards system, job design, or even the nature of working environment. The critical determinant is the ability to take control of one’s own situation.

The perceived control over one’s situation has been termed as psychological empowerment.

Studies by Thomas and Velthouse (1990) have resulted in a cognitive model of empowerment. It determines the motivation of individual’s assessment of how high his or her feelings are. These assessments are positively related to the feelings of empowerment.

These are four sub variables are:

Impact
Competence
Meaning
Self determination

The lack of any single dimension will deplete though not completely eliminate the overall degree of felt empowerment. Thus the four dimensions specify a complete or sufficient set of cognitions for understanding empowerment.

Organic structure, organizational support assess to strategic information to attend organizational resources and organizational culture are identified as social, structural antecedents of psychological empowerment. Innovation, upward influencing and self managerial effectiveness are identified as the behavioral outcomes.   These affect the employee’s feelings of empowerment.

Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB):

It is an individual behavior that is discretionary, not directly or explicitly recognized by the formal reward system and that in the aggregate promotes the effective function of the organization.

OCB could be directed towards variety of foci like co-workers, supervisors, customers, etc.

When employees receive low empowerment in conjunction with perception of procedural justices or unfair treatment, they may be more likely to withdraw OCB than when the experience low inducements like employment alongside procedural and interactional justice.

Unhappy Relationships – Three Options on How to Deal Being in an Unhappy Relationship

Unhappy Relationships – Three Options on How to Deal Being in an Unhappy Relationship

As we all know, there is no perfect relationship. An unhappy relationship is sometimes just a part of romance and there can be numerous reasons why a relationship is unhappy.

When you are in an unhappy relationship, you usually find it hard to leave because you feel you already have made your commitment. You may also feel that you have to be there to support the one you love. Most of the time, you find yourself making excuses just to stay in a situation that you know is already making you unhappy. If you are caught in an unhappy relationship, there are three things that you can do about it. What are they?

Your first option is to do nothing. This is the easiest and the simplest. Just to let things be as they are. You will continue in your path of misery and sometimes up to a point where you are now dragging along the people around you to be miserable too. This situation happens because it is hard to turn a bad relationship around and doing nothing is the easiest thing to do. It may sound noble but it is a bad decision and it is not healthy and good to the people involved.

The second option is the most challenging one. This involves staying in the relationship but wanting the relationship to be a good one. This requires both individuals to be fully committed not only in making the relationship work but in sticking it out no matter how difficult the situation gets. Both should also work together to turn an unhappy relationship into a happy one. This is the most difficult but the most rewarding one if goals are achieved. Any changes here will be lasting and will make the relationship stronger than it was before. However, both are required to be fully committed in making the relationship better, if only one is committed in working it out then the relationship is doomed.

The third option is to leave. If you feel there is already too much unhappiness, fighting, depression and many other negative factors coming out, then it is time to leave before things get even worse. This is not really easy as it takes a lot of courage to end a relationship no matter how unhappy it was. But sticking it out will not only hurt both of you but also the people around you.

If you feel you want the relationship to work and you are willing to ask assistance from a professional therapist then do so. A therapist can help you in unloading mental hindrances that can contribute to the difficulties in the relationship. If you also feel that you need strategies to make your relationship be a success then  seek a coach that can really help you.

With an unhappy relationship, you have three choices that you can do: 1) You can either stay and bear all the suffering; 2) You can choose to take up steps to improve and work on your relationship and turn it around; 3) You can say enough is enough and recognize that the relationship is already irreparable and move on with your life. Therapists and coaches can provide you with the help and guidance you need while your family and friends are there to support you. But the decision to choose what is the right thing to do for your own happiness is entirely all up to you. This can help you: How To Get Your Relationships Needs Met To Have A Happy Relationship.

Goals and Objectives – How to Achieve your Goals

Goals and Objectives – How to Achieve your Goals

By Alexander Michaels

Do you find that you are constantly missing goals you have set for yourself even when you know perfectly well that you could have achieved them?

Well you are not alone. There are three main reasons that you may be failing to achieve your goals:

1. You did not really want to achieve the goals in the first place

2. You wanted to achieve the goals but you did not have the skills to achieve them.

3. You wanted to achieve the goals, you had the skills, but something totally outside of your control happened to stop you from achieving them.

Let’s go through these reasons one by one.
1) You did not really want to achieve the goals in the first place:

People often set goals for themselves that they do not really want to achieve. They might set a goal to lose 20 lbs within 6 months but do not really want to change their behavior in order to be able to achieve the goal. This is quite simple to understand and resolve. When you decide to set yourself a goal think about what you have to do in order to achieve that particular goal. If at the time you find it more painful to take all the necessary actions to achieve that goal than your perceived enjoyment in or benefit from achieving that goal, then the likely outcome is that you won’t really go for it. And in life, not really going for something generally means not achieving it at all.
2) You wanted to achieve the goals but you did not have the skills to achieve them:

Hey, it is Ok to have great goals for yourself. It is often said that once you really decide to do something the universe will make ways for you to achieve it. Or that once you are ready for something the teacher will appear. Well, both statements are true to an extent. The universe will help you and open doors for you when you are ready. The teacher might even appear when you are “ready”. But you have to have learnt how to walk so that you can go through those doors and get to the other side. You also have to be willing to do the homework that the teacher sets you. So, once you decide to achieve a certain goal, help yourself by learning everything you can about how to achieve that goal. Having at least some of the required skills will multiply your chances of achieving your worthwhile goals.
3) Something totally outside of your control happened to stop you from achieving them:

This is what most people claim to be the reason they do not achieve their goals. This is called making excuses for your failures. Don’t feel ashamed if you do this. We all do this to an extent. We make excuses for not really making the effort to achieve what we have said we would. And since we do not want to admit that we are lying to ourselves we find external events to blame for our lack of effort. Yes, this is very common and quite normal. It is so common in fact that we don’t even feel bad anymore about lying to ourselves that we are lying to ourselves. You have to start taking responsibility for your actions or lack of actions. Once you start to take responsibility and stop blaming everything and everyone else, you begin to gain RESPONSE ABILITY. Failure to fully understand this powerful concept may stop you from fully realizing your full potential.

So what is the bottom line?

The bottom line is that if you are constantly missing your goals then we must conclude that your conscious and subconscious are not aligned. When you state a goal to yourself, at a superficial level you probably believe everything you are saying. However, at a deeper level, the level we call your subconscious, things are a little bit more complex. Your subconscious looks at your history, your experiences (both real and imagined), and your beliefs. It then tries to compare this with the goal you have just set for yourself and projects the outcomes into the future.

If your subconscious feels that your goal is not realistic and that going for it might cause you too much pain, it will arrange for obstacles to stop you. If your subconscious feels that, in its’ estimation, your latest goal is possible, it might assist you in achieving it. Why do I just say that it might assist you rather than it would assist you? Because your subconscious also looks at your record in following through with your decisions, especially decisions you make that require you to go outside your comfort zone without all the skills and everything else in place. If your record in taking the required actions despite your fears is good, then your subconscious will assist you in continuing to go outside your areas of comfort. In other words, your subconscious will assist you in going after goals that you have not already achieved before because you have developed a habit of going after goals that you have not already achieved before.

It is an amazing thing. On the one hand, your subconscious will determine what you can achieve in the future by looking at what you have achieved in the past. So we might say that your past determines your future to a large extent. On the other hand, your subconscious looks at your ability and willingness to tackle what you have not achieved before. It looks at how you have handled failure in the past. If your subconscious determines that you can handle failure, that you have decided not to be devastated by the results of going after something bigger than your past, then your subconscious will willingly assist you in stretching yourself. Your goal becomes an adventure for both your conscious and your subconscious.

Your conscious might make the initial decision. But it is your subconscious that determines what is possible. So the way to change your ability to achieve your goals is to actively bring your conscious and subconscious together. Make sure they agree and are aligned together. If not then either abandon the goal and find something else more agreeable, or start to train your subconscious to believe that you will go for your goal with intensity and that you are man or woman enough to accept the results no matter what. You can only achieve this by taking action to achieve your goals even when you are afraid. Don’t worry; we are all afraid, but taking action becomes easier with time and practice.

And Finally:

Your subconscious loves you and is an integral part of the whole you. However, it is almost like an independent best friend or a loving parent. It loves and cares for you so much that it will do whatever it can to protect you from pain in the best way it knows. This could be either by stopping you from achieving your goals or by helping you achieve your goals. You have the power to influence which decision your subconscious makes. Align your conscious and subconscious and life will become much easier, more successful and more fun.

The Most Avoidable Career Change Mistakes – Part 2

The Most Avoidable Career Change Mistakes – Part 2

Continuing from Part 1, let us see a few more career change mistakes that can disrupt the most successful professional lives when made without giving the following a thought:

Possibilities: Career change is a very critical phase in anyone’s career and hence it is imperative that one considers all possibilities and consequences of the same. Researching all such possibilities would be a good practice before making the switch. This research can be done online, by talking to your network and also by reading job profiles and news related to the new career. This will give you an insight into various careers that are available for you and will help you to make a more informed decision regarding your career change.

Personal parameters: Opting for a career change without self reflection and without considering personal likes and dislikes could be suicidal for any career. Assessing one’s own interests, skills and values is highly critical to any career change. Such an analysis is easy to do and all one needs is to make a list of things that one loves to do- in a job, at home or even in hobbies and another list of things that you will never want to do again. While deciding on a career changes, these lists can be used to perform a SWOT (Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats) and can have a great bearing on a conceived career change.

Blinded by other’s success: A career change cannot be bought upon oneself by just looking at someone who is a success in a different career. You are you and not the other person; the personal qualities differ and make the thin line between success and failure. Considering that career while deciding upon a career change is good, but do not try and replicate someone else’s success. There are too many assumptions in doing so and most people who have attempted a career changes in such circumstances have failed. The grass certainly appears greener on the other side but is not the case most times, especially for something as critical as a career change.

Experience and Education: While contemplating a career change, it is always important to research and strategize on bridging the gap of education, experience and skills between the present career and the new career that you are trying to make a career change to. Transferable or common skills are important but a little bit of focused education and skill building may become important to make the career change. You could begin by interacting with professionals in the new career and attending informative workshops.

Job search techniques: Making a career change almost always involves a job change, so it is important that one polishes his or her job search techniques before embarking on the search. Interviewing skills and resume writing techniques would also need some polish especially since you are out of the search market for some time pursuing your current career. Make sure that you go through these basics before you decide on the career change.

Conclusion

A career change involves too many personal variables. Make sure that you polish up on almost all variables before you decide on your all important career change.
