3 steps in helping to reduce repetitive anxious thoughts

Your standing the conference room with all your peers looking at you as your about to give your big presentation.  You were so confident that you were going to nail this, you’ve prepared for weeks.  Then you start thinking “I’m going to mess this up and fail big time”.  It is fair to say that people do have an inclination to think a certain way and have repetitive thoughts about events or situations that bring on anxiety.  The thoughts can be so repetitive that they mess up your ability to finish tasks, thus creating more anxiety and panic within us.  This type of thinking can become a terrible cycle that can be very difficult to undo. 

So how can people that suffer from repetitive anxious thoughts eliminate the intensity of the thought? 

1)      An anxious thought enters your mind and whatever the thought, the sequence of feelings is always the same.

The anxious thought comes in and you instantly react with fear. The fear you just felt sends a shock through your nervous system to the pit of your stomach. The reaction you’re having within your body makes you think of the thought over and over. The stronger the thoughts become the more your mind and body start to lose control completely.

 

2)      You start to question the thoughts, sometimes for an entire day.  The more you think about the thoughts the harder it seems for them to go away.

Why am I thinking about these thoughts? Why can’t I get this feeling to go away?

 

3)      How do you start to eliminate the unwanted anxious thoughts?

Don’t force the thoughts away, this is very important. Allow the thought to come in, the more comfortable you are with them the better. The thoughts will not go away fully, but you can change the way you react to them. When you become able to change your anxious thoughts the more free you become of them.

 

The most important thing to remember is everyone, and I mean everyone has anxious thoughts.  Most people as they have the anxious thought usually just think their just crazy thoughts and push them out of their mind immediately.  They see it for what it truly is a fleeting anxious thought and they just ignore it.  To people who have anxiety the anxious thought fuels out of control thoughts.  Choosing how to react to your anxious thoughts are key for reducing anxiety. 

Try to observe the thought you are having and then label it.  By labeling the thought you are calling out were the thought is coming from, as in fear.  Next, watch how the thought passes through your mind and don’t judge the thought just watch it.  Finally move your focus on to whatever you were doing when the thought came into your mind.

A number of persons have pondered over how to program mind control in the self in order to accomplish the mind over matter challenge.  Our minds are truly powerful tools, and with the right training, may be our biggest asset towards accomplishing success and improvement in quality of life.  For the most part, what we imagine in our minds is an ideal scenario of what we would like our lives and our surroundings to be like.  At the same time, in dealing with everyday life and situations which are substandard to our ideal, it is our brain that tells us to keep forging forward from day to day, and that the scenarios we face are not at all too negative.  Mind over matter is a very strong statement to cling on to, regardless of how cliché it may already be.  Because our brains truly are capable of telling the body that it is ok to keep going, to keep on pushing the limit of what seems possible and impossible.

Studies show that brainwaves function similarly while processing imaginative images and real occurrences.  This may be how the mind effectively coerces the body to keep pushing, by instilling in it a state of positivity regardless of the negative and untoward elements and occurrences in the external environment.  With the brain functioning nonstop, it can manage to create a feeling that may be associated to when an individual is daydreaming of the utopian scenario he or she aspires for, putting the body in a relaxed yet headstrong condition, making the notion of impossibility a minute issue.

Along with this, further studies lead us to believe that how to program mind filters is innate in us.  Each person’s brain is capable of screening the thought, ideas, sights, sounds and situations it processes, only making notes of things which are relevant to that which is ideal in a person’s mind.  That includes relativity both in a negative and positive sense, and our powerful brain is able to tell in an instant whether a certain something is an asset or a hurdle.  One must remember that developing an ideal scenario in the mind is triggered by the imagination, and filling out bits and pieces of this scenario happens sporadically throughout the day, an automatic function of our brain.  In filtering actual encounters, our brain is able to pinpoint those hurdles, and almost instantly our imagination is triggered to create a reverse scenario in our minds, one which conforms to our ideal.

It is for this reason that training the self to be positive is essential in how to program mind.  Maintaining an optimistic outlook helps train the imagination to see things in a more constructive sense, thereby easing the brain into converting everyday developments into what it thinks of as an ultimate condition.  Many new age beliefs say that what you receive is that which you ask from the universe.  All things that go through your mind, whether lived out in reality or constructed in the imagination make up what you ask of the universe.  And that is why a positive way of thinking is beneficial to each person.

The habit of positive thinking is something that many of us have to work at.  It just seems to take less effort and it is more natural to have a negative mindset.  However, in order for a person to be happy and successful, they must be optimistic and have a positive mental attitude.  Here are some tips that will help you cultivate that positive thinking habit and become the person you know you can be.

Take Care of The Body

The mind and body work together. They are separate parts of your being working together as a whole person.  If you want your mind to be positive, then it would be greatly beneficial if the body is healthy and functioning at maximum capacity also. 

Get enough rest.  Get, at the very least, 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.  You will be rested, refreshed, and energized.  Your mind will be much clearer, also.

Good nutrition is absolutely essential if you want a healthy mind and body.  More vegetables and fruit in your diet will accelerate energy levels and flush out toxins.  Physical exercise such as walking, jogging, or aerobics keep the heart healthy and clears the mind.  Yoga is also an excellent exercise to help your body stretch, improve flexibility, and even decrease body aches and tension.

Take Care of The Mind

Nutrition is also a valid concern when whipping your mind into shape.  The human brain is a small organ that weighs about 3 pounds yet it uses up to 30% of your daily caloric intake.  The brain is burning calories even when you are sleeping.  Breakfast is the only way to nutritionally revitalize your mind and mood when you wake up.  Good carbohydrates such as oatmeal or whole grain cereals are excellent choices to keep your mind fed and happy. 

Meditation is also beneficial to helping the mind remain focused.  In meditation you will clear your mind of all thought concentrating on nothing except your breathing.  When thoughts enter your mind during mediation and they certainly will, you acknowledge them and allow them to pass through.  You do not hold on to or dwell on any conscious thought.  If you are new to meditation, try a guided meditation first.  This will get you accustomed to the feel and sense of clearing your mind.  When your are able to think more clearly, you will be better able to focus on your goals and those things that are most important to you.

Positive Affirmations

This is a basic key to positive thinking.  Every positive thinking teacher or coach will tell you to use affirmations.  Affirmations are short sentences or blurbs that you repeat to yourself, either silently or aloud.  We learn by repetition.  Repeating positive statements every day, many times a day, causes our minds to begin to believe in the positive.  There are many positive affirmations available for you to use. You can and should customize positive affirmations to your unique situation.

Positive Thinking Discipline

Positive thinking, in order to be effectual, must be practiced each and every day.  It should become a habit just like taking a shower or exercise.  When you wake up in the morning have a positive affirmation at the ready to say to yourself before your feet hit the floor.  Always be mindful of negative influences and thoughts and immediately dispel them by replacing those negatives with a positive or even two or three positives. 

Encourage Others

This is a profound way to keep yourself positive.  You have probably heard the saying, ‘Love isn’t love until you give it away.’  Well, the same holds true with positive thinking.  When you begin to actively seek out opportunities to encourage and uplift others, it comes back to you.  This is sometimes referred to as karma.  Karma operates on the idea that what goes around comes around.

Visualize

Take time to sit quietly and get a mental picture of your dream/goal.  See yourself where you want to be.  See and feel the details; is it sunny and warm or cool?  What colors do you see?  Settle this imagine firmly in your mind so that when the daily grind begins to push you to the negative, you can call this image back to mind.  Focus on it for as long as you can.  This will help kick your positive thinking back into gear.  Vision boards will also help you to focus on your goals.  A vision board, in the simplest terms, is a board with pictures and words that help you see the realization of your goal. 

Laugh Yourself Into Positive Thinking Mode

Humor is an exceptionally effective tool in putting your mind back on the positive wavelength.  It is virtually, if not absolutely, impossible to stay in a negative mind frame when you are laughing.  Watch a comedy or bring your thoughts to some time or person or place that brings you joy. 

Surround Yourself With Other Positive Thinkers

Optimism is contagious.  When you are around others who think positively and have a good outlook for the future, it spreads to you.  You will be encouraged and uplifted by being around those who can and will support your own optimism.  Stay away from negative influences as much as possible. 

Emulate Those Who Have Already Achieved

No matter what your dreams or goals are, there is probably someone out there who has already achieved the success that you are aiming for.  Read their success stories. Study that person.  Find out the steps they took, the path they chose to get them to the desired result.  You will find that they, too, practiced positive thinking even through the set backs.  Do what they did and take the same steps.

Positive thinking discipline takes effort.  If it is success in your career or harmony in relationships or even more money that you desire, the effort will be well spent.
