Daniel Goleman’s brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our “two minds”—the rational and the emotional—and how they together shape our destiny.

The Best Personal Development Goal is Goal Achievement
The Best Personal Development Goal is Goal Achievement
Personal development has the main aim of helping you to reach your goals! This is its main purpose. To discover personal development for yourself and experience it in a real-life way you need to know the major factors to successful goal setting that lead to goal-getting.
Here I have given six essential personal development steps that, if followed, will help you to always reach your goals.
Keep in mind that there are over six billion inhabitants of the earth currently and just as many have lived in the past. You can take heart in the fact that somewhere at sometime, someone has achieved what you are trying to achieve now!
Although there are many personal development methods available for goal achievement some are better than others. It is important to be clear on what it is you want before you decide which the best way to get it.
Here are your personal development tips to help.
Step 1. Get clarity:
Know what you want. You must have a clear vision of what it will be like once you have achieved your goal. You must be able to evoke the feelings associated with having already achieved it. This is a true personal development power trick and the lack of this step is the reason why the majority of people fail time and time again! The “whys” behind having your goal are vital. Why do you want it? Why would it improve your life? Why should you have it? Answer these personal development questions and you will have won three quarters of the battle!
Step 2. Research, research, research:
Do some personal development research. Study your chosen goal. Know everything you can about. Seek out the stories of those who have what you want and learn how they got it! Carefully study the path taken by everyone who started in a similar situation to you but overcame all odds to achieve the goal that you now want to achieve. Their stories can be found if you choose to look for them! ! Look at how they did it then formulate a similar personal development plan!
Step 3. Smooth out the path:
Once you have successfully performed your personal development research you should have learned about your goal. By studying the lives of those who have already achieved it you will find that in the majority of cases these people encountered many problems – the bigger the goal, the bigger the problems in most cases. Learn from their personal development trials and tribulations. Anticipate how you may encounter problems and how you will deal with them. Or, better still, move in a direction that minimizes the “need” for problems in the first place.
Step 4. Formulate your plan:
Create a solid personal development plan that will bring you your goal. Set smaller objectives and break them down into yearly, monthly, weekly and daily stepping-stone goals. Once each one of these personal development objectives has been completed it should have brought you a little or a lot closer to your goal. This is real personal development!
Step 5. Keep it real:
Be realistic about your expectations in each personal development step – do not bite off more than you can chew! When creating your smaller objectives ensure you are realistic about their scale and time limits. Small steps taken everyday are much better than giant strides every month!
Step 6. Motivation:
Use personal development techniques to keep yourself motivated. Form a visual image of yourself already in possession of your goal and mentally rehearsh your success everyday. Evoke the strong positive emotion that you identified in step 1 and really feel it as you visualize. This is one of the most powerful personal development tricks you can use and should not be underestimated!
You now have six powerful personal steps to use. Takes these steps and you’ll experience success. All the best in your personal development plans!

6 Personal Development Steps to Success
6 Personal Development Steps to Success
I offer this practical personal development guide to success for all those who have tried before yet failed. It doesn’t matter where you are now in your your own personal development or or where you wish to go. It matters very little how far reaching your personal development goal is or how hard it appears to be to attain. No matter what you want to achieve rest assured that some else has achieved something similar beginning somewhere close to where you are. If they did it so can you!
If you follow the 6 personal development steps set out before you, you will be achieving your personal development goals very soon.
Step 1.
The first personal development step is essential! You must be clear about what you want! When you begin to set personal development goals ensure you have a very definite arrival point. Some people when they want to better their lives look around for the path of least resistance. They have no real idea of what they want from life but just know they want to improve it. They therefore look at many different things and try many different personal development approaches without every really devoting themselves to one objective and never achieving success. There is no personal development!
If you live in New York and wish to visit San Diego you do not begin by looking at the most convenient and easiest route before you decide your destination! You just decide you want to go to San Diego!
It is the same with any personal development goal. No matter how hard or unreasonable your desire may seem you must always follow your heart! Have a clear definition of what success means to you. Set you personal development goal now by deciding exactly what it is you want from life!
Step 2.
Narrow the personal development goal down. Get specific. Deciding that you are going to visit San Diego is all well and good but the city is extremely large. Where in San Diego do you want to go? Be specific in your goals. For example, wanting to lose weight is a reasonable and achievable goal but it is too vague. Set a target for your weight loss. Do you want to lose 5 pounds, 10 or even 20 pounds? To achieve any kind of personal development you must be specific!
Step 3.
Write your personal development goal down. Make in concrete by putting it on paper. Place it somewhere where you can see it everyday. It makes the goal real and acts as a reminder of what you are working towards. This is why company’s have their mission statement in giant letters where every employee can see it! Create your mission statement and on it place your goal.
Step 4.
Create a personal development plan. Look for ways that will help you achieve this goal. How did others achieve similar results? Did they learn lessons from experience which you can also learn without having to experience the learning as they did? Use the personal development journeys of others. How did other people do it? Learn from their mistakes and use them for your own learning. Someone else may have failed hundreds of times in their personal development before they learned to do it right. You don’t have to be the same. Just follow the final plan they used to succeed!
Step 5.
Once you have a personal development plan break it down into smaller more easily achievable goals. Each day should not pass without you being a little closer to achieving your goal. No matter how the small the steps are just take them and ensure you are taking them in the right direction!
Step 6.
Create a mental picture of success. Picture yourself enjoying the personal development achievement of having already acquired your goal. Feel all the positive emotions that come with this success. Review this mental picture first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
Personal development step 6 is often overlooked yet it is one of the most important of the personal development steps. By visualizing your goal attainment you are programming your mind with the blueprint of success. This will keep you motivated in times of self-doubt or frustration.
Follow these 6 simple steps and personal development and success are guaranteed!

The Myths about Positive Thinking
The Myths about Positive Thinking
We keep hearing about the importance of the power of positive thinking. All motivational gurus tell us that being positive is an essential to our success and finding happiness. It is necessary for our daily stress management. The Secret is a bestselling book and movie explaining in detail the benefits of believing that good things can and will happen.
But with all the talk, we still don’t understand how to banish those negative thoughts.
A positive attitude can add healthy happy years to our lives and is considered to be the key to happiness.
It can help us drive towards a successful enterprise. It has been shown to help parents have healthier and smarter kids. Smiling makes us more physically attractive, and our relationships will generally run smoother.
Besides, no one likes to hang out with a party pooper.
So what has gone so wrong with positive thinking theory that we have had such a hard time adopting it? Here are some myths that you may have come to believe about the art of..well…believing.
Myth 1: Positive Thinking is Magical. Just believe and all your wishes will come true. Just think positive thoughts and everything will fall into place instantly, and you will reduce stress immediately.
This is so outlandish that we have a hard time believing such things happen. As far as I know, no one has found the Genie lamp, yet.
It is not that positive thinking cannot change your life and feel like magic. It has worked wonders in my life, bringing my wishes into reality. But there was no magic involved. Thinking and believing my desires can all come true has driven me to the hard work, creativity and focus necessary to make them happen.
The thought didn’t bring about the final outcome. The thought brought me to the place where I was willing and able to make the necessary commitments and do the tasks to bring about the final outcomes.
Myth 2: You can simply turn it on. From now on, just think positive and watch your ideal life unfold. Ignore the negative thoughts altogether.
Have you read enough books to think that this can happen? Have you ever resolved, “From now on, I will be more positive”? How long did that resolution last?
You can’t simply shut off your mind, or decide not to think about something. Here is an exercise to prove it: Don’t think about a pink elephant. Think about anything you want, just not a pink elephant.
OK, what are you thinking about?
The term positive thinking is misleading. Perhaps a better way to say it is Positive Filter. Rather than trying to un-think something, change the filter in which these thoughts enter the mind. We may be surrounded by negativity, but we can choose to not take it in. We are surrounded by as much positivity, and we can choose to focus on that instead.
It is what you choose to focus on which makes anything a positive or negative experience. The challenge is to make it all credible so your mind adopts this as an attitude in life, rather than a mere occasional exercise.
For example, instead of thinking of someone else’s shortcomings, can you think of his or her triumphs? And if there are none, can you focus on incredible people who do wonderful things? Instead of discussing all your misfortunes and gossiping with a friend, can you discuss your hopes and dreams and the happy changes in your life, or a recent positive or funny experience?
Instead of focusing on not having a job or how difficult it is to find one, can you choose to focus on opportunities in your life or how you can open more doors? Or focus on the gratitude for things you have in your life, (family, friends, health, skills, anything). This will give you the necessary state of mind to have peace at any situation.
Myth 3: Becoming a more positive thinker is an enjoyable experience.
The truth is that negativity is a deep seated habit, and like all such habits, it is hard to break. It is a basis for many of our other detrimental behaviors. Are you really ready to kick the habit?
Why is it so hard to give up a habit of negativity? Like all of our basic behaviors, it is familiar and known, which means it is comfortable. But what if you were told some habit of yours is creating havoc in your life and it is destructive to both your physical and mental wellbeing? Would you change it?
It is also difficult to switch from negative to positive because much of our negativity is tied to our self-image. What we think to be true about ourselves and others around us, what we were told when we were young, what everyone we know says and does. It simply feels unnatural to let go of what we know to be true. We may even feel ridiculous and disingenuous at first. We’ll be such oddballs! Downright silly!
Furthermore, some of us are tied to our loved ones through negativity. It is what we discuss, what we experience together and there is a fear that letting go of negativity will cost us too dearly. Negative thinking is a breeding ground for many of our other unhealthy behaviors which we may not be ready to give up: overeating, smoking, procrastination, various addictions, chaotic relationships, etc.
So what’s to be done in face of such a challenge? Take small steps and don’t expecting overnight changes, for a start.
Here are some things you can do immediately. First, know positive thinking can be as contagious as negative thinking. Be the leader in your circle, perhaps, to change the conversation or simply make a bright observation on dark topics.
You may also have to decide that some people may be too toxic, and it may be time to limit the time or intensity of some of your relationships. Or you may have to take more control of these relationships and set some boundaries.
The point is, you may have to give up a few things to be the person you want to be. Reevaluating relationships is part of it. This is not always enjoyable, and it can be a difficult task, but well worth it if you are ready to recreate your life.
Myth 4: A positive attitude means believing everything is fine no matter what.
There are realities in the world; some of them are not very pretty. There are environmental disasters, global instability, wars, disease, hunger, economic distress….How can you find any peace of mind and positivity in such a world?
If you find nothing good about a situation, then focus on the solution and take action. This is an immediate boost to your mental state! If there is no solution, and there are no positive aspects to your thought, then you may need to reexamine the topics on which you wish to focus, and why you choose to focus on them.
Practicing positive thinking means anticipating happiness, joy, health and a successful outcome of every situation and action. It means expecting favorable results, yet allowing ourselves to prepare and be at peace with the unexpected, unintended or seemingly unsatisfactory.
It is normal and healthy to prepare ourselves for situations that are less than ideal. The point is to learn to handle any situation or challenge which comes our way. Instead of thinking and focusing about just the outcomes, make every journey as enjoyable as possible. Favorable outcomes are more likely when we choose the brighter path.
Turning a blind eye to reality and giving caution to the wind is not a sign of positive thinking! It is called denial, which is a symptom of negativity. A negative thinker may not want to see the possibility of unfavorable outcomes or ignore difficulties. A positive thinker will look at all aspects of a given situation – challenges, possible end results, limitations, etc. – and find ways to work with them, or at least trust himself or herself to handle things successfully.
Developing the Positive State of Mind
Developing a positive state of mind may take time but I found it to be both enjoyable as well as meaningful. Some of the tools I am using are regular affirmations, creative visualization, positive self-talk, expressing gratitude, a vision board and prayers. Each of these techniques needs to be learned and used properly to be effective.
Easy and practical ways to start more positive thinking right now is to surround yourself with positive and happy people, read inspiring literature, see only uplifting movies, avoid negative media messages and unsatisfied people. Another powerful resource you can use on your own is self-hypnosis and meditation recordings. Such products help you adopt the lifestyle you want and give you a boost when you need it.
And always feel free to stick to the age-old advice: “If you can’t say anything nice, say nothing.” Do not be responsible for beginning or continuing negative thoughts, which spread like wild fire and are deadly and contagious.
Remember, the most important part of making the change to be a more positive person and to take up some positive thinking habits: it’s a decision, and it is up to you to make it, over and over again.
“Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Abraham Lincoln

ATTITUDE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
ATTITUDE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
Success and performance depends on our attitude. A person with positive attitude is a high performer. In our life there are things over which we have no control or have very little control. But if we control our attitudes these uncontrollable things will contribute positively to our personality.
People react differently to the same event. It’s strange! It’s the result of our attitudes. External events may be beyond our control, but our reactions are fully under our control. If we have the right attitude we will use every event to celebrate our lives.
Attitude is the way we look at the world. We can look at the world in two ways: either positively or negatively. Our personality depends on the way we choose to take. And depending on this we can be the biggest asset or the biggest liability in our society and organization. It depends on our attitudes. We have to control our attitudes and cultivate in us positive attitudes in spite ofallstruggles.
We can change our attitudes. William James tells, “the greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” Great buildings have great foundations. The foundation of our happiness, our success and our productivity is our attitude. If I am a person of negative attitude I can choose to become a positive minded person. It’s possible and easy to control and change our attitudes.
To change our attitude we must learn to think positively whenever something negative happens to us. Try to see something good in every person and in every event. Speak positively about people and about us. Fill our minds with more positive thoughts than negative ones. Think `I can’ and we will succeed. Learn to look more at the half-full glass and forget about the half-empty glass and we will see life in full everywhere.
When we have the right attitude we won’t be going for the never-ending search for diamonds outside us. When we have the right attitude we realize that we are walking on diamonds. We see in every event and person a great opportunity for us to learn and grow. We will be optimistic and see only good in every person and everywhere; we will begin to count our many blessings instead of counting our few failures. With the right attitude every failure becomes an opportunity for us to learn and walk towards success with greater determination and passion.
Our environment, education and experience also can determine our attitudes. Environmental factors like our homes, school, friends, work atmosphere, media, cultural, religious, social, and political situation etc can mould our attitude. The positive experience we have of a person, event and situation also gives a positive attitude. Wisdom, knowledge, skills and qualification also can determine our attitudes. We need to consciously choose to acquire the right attitudes.
Fruits of positive attitudes: A person with positive attitude is caring, confident, patient, humble, cheerful, fun loving, positive, hardworking, dedicated, committed and has high expectations about him and others. He constantly improves his productivity, has an easy approach to problems, improves quality of work, creates lasting and effective relationships, is highly loyal to the organisation, passionately contributes to its profit, reduces stress, forms in him a pleasing personality, is courageous to take risks and initiatives, and takes responsibility for his growth and performance.
The negative attitude also has some influence on a person which can ruin his career and his life. He becomes bitter, resentful and a pessimist. It has bad effects on his health and performance. He complains constantly that roses have thorns and fails to see the beautiful roses among the thorns.
Attitude affects our every aspect of life. Happiness is the product of our attitudes because right attitudes will produce right actions. Only right actions can make us happy. If we have the right attitude we will see the invisible, feel the intangible and achieve the impossible. Having positive attitudes is a sure way to succeed in life. It is a sure way to long and cheerful life.
Let us opt for a great attitude to have a great life.

Heart Disease Hits The Famous
Heart Disease Hits The Famous
Fame often divides among people. Famous people enjoy many privileges that others do not, but the privilege of avoiding heart disease is not one of them.
A famous person with heart disease faces the same risk factors as those who are not famous. A famous person with heart disease experiences the same symptoms, and can die of heart disease. The famous do not escape heart disease, known by physicians as coronary artery disease (CAD).
Examples of Famous People with Heart Disease
A famous person with heart disease who recently (March 2007) underwent triple heart bypass surgery is Regis Philbin well-known United States TV host. He had experienced typical heart disease symptoms such as chest pains and shortness of breath, despite having angioplasty 14 years ago. He joined a long list of famous people with heart disease. Here are a mere dozen of them.
* Bill Clinton – quadruple bypass surgery in 2004
* David Letterman – quadruple bypass surgery in 2000
* Larry King – heart attack and bypass surgery in 1987
* Mike Ditka – heart attack in 1988
* Tommy Lasorda – heart attack in 1996
* Dick Cheney – at least 4 heart attacks
* Phyllis Diller – heart attack in 1999
* Elizabeth Taylor – congestive heart failure
* Victoria Gotti – heart disease from age 16
* Ma Ji – died of heart disease in 2006
* Alfredo Di Stefano – heart attack in 2005
* Sir Ranulph Fiennes – heart attack and bypass surgery
Heart Disease Treatment
A famous person with heart disease may be able to afford the best treatment available. Every effort will likely be made not only to save their lives but to return them to the fullest possible health.
Advantages of Heart Disease in the Famous
A famous person with heart disease can be a highly-recognized spokesperson for companies that offer heart disease medications, diet plans, and other treatments aimed at reducing heart disease. It is said that immediately after a famous person has a heart attack or major heart surgery, hundreds of people schedule physical examinations – especially men.
The heart disease is not, of course, an advantageous experience for the famous person undergoing it. It can awaken them to their need for lifestyle changes, but other than that, it is just as excruciating for the famous as for those who have no claim to fame.
No One Is Invincible
Whether it is a famous person with heart disease or a person who is famous only to his or her family, no one is invincible. That may be one of the biggest lessons to be learned from hearing of yet another famous person with heart disease. Another big lesson is that we should all heed the multitude of warnings, and take action to prevent heart disease in ourselves and our loved ones.

Will You Shift? an Invitation to Awaken
Will You Shift? an Invitation to Awaken
Copyright (c) 2008 Karen Talavera
There is a global phenomenon underway that is picking up momentum like wildfire and offering seeds of great hope for the future of humankind. Chances are not long after or even before you finish reading this article you’ll hear about it from someone else in your life. Perk up your ears, you’re about to learn about The Shift.
Millions of individuals, organizations, and corporations around the world are waking up and embracing a new outlook with an emphasis on their responsibility to contribute positively to our collective future. We are witnessing the budding of the greatest transformation in human history. It is a shift in consciousness that will propel our species to a new level of thinking, acting, and being; to a new level of existence in harmony with one another and our planet, Earth, our home. Some refer to it as the shift from third to fourth dimensional consciousness. However you see it, as one who has studied the teachings consistent with this concept and watched for the signs, I am happy to report there is clear and abundant evidence that a shift is now beginning to flower.
If this news is either incredibly exciting to you, totally confusing, or you fall somewhere in between, take heart, help is coming. There is a major motion picture being made called The Shift (www.theshiftmovie.com) slated to be released in Spring 2008 which I suggest you keep your eyes open for and see when it is released. It is being produced as a full length feature by Lighthouse Films and it appears to be spearheaded and/or produced by Deepak Chopra and George Clooney. You can watch a preview today on the movie’s Web site, or even on YouTube.
I am compelled to spread the word of this because by sheer coincidence and grace, for the past two years I have come deeply into the area of knowledge, realization, and personal growth that this movie addresses. What I thought just months ago was a random encounter with a little known advanced spiritual teaching is at this moment going mainstream and being shared by millions across the globe. At the time of this writing (March 2008) hundreds of thousands are awakening through none other than Oprah Winfrey as a conduit since she picked her latest Book Club selection, A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle.
As many of you have heard or seen, Oprah began a free 10-week live webcast series with Eckhart Tolle on Monday March 3, 2008. With over 700,000 people pre-registered for the premiere session and attempting to view it online simultaneously, it was difficult to see it live, although it is archived and available on demand. Since the webcast series premiere, according to Oprah’s company Harpo, another 1.5 million have viewed the archived version. As a result, there are over 4,000 different discussion threads on the Oprah Message Board for the book alone, having generated over 400,000 views on various topics (with yours truly an active participant in the discussions). The activity level is intense; but to me, already familiar with the teaching, it brings overwhelming joy to see multitudes all sharing and learning simultaneously. And overwhelming evidence of The Shift.
At this point, for a shift to successfully complete, it is imperative to make as many people as possible aware of this globally-growing way of thinking, acting, and being. This evolutionary phenomenon is broader and deeper than the most visible shift, the environmental movement. It involves our very understanding of who we are as human beings, and our responsibility to the world and to life itself.
Throughout recorded history many teachers and their followers, mostly religious mystics, have written books or texts explaining the true nature of our existence, of reality, and how to live. Buddha, Jesus, Moses, Mohammed, Lao-tzu, Ramana Maharshi and many others have been the traditional teachers. Eckhart Tolle is one of the clearest and most concise modern teachers who resonates widely with people across the planet. Previous to Tolle and perhaps better known to many, especially in the United States, are also Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Byron Katie, Neale Donald Walsch, Thom Hartmann and Marianne Williamson. Then of course there are globally-known spiritual activists like the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela. For the science-minded who prefer a non-spiritual context, there is physicist Brian Greene.
What they all have in common is this: no one of them is attempting to create a religion, exclusive group, or ideology. Instead, the essence of their messages is the same; they all speak to one identical truth. What is it? That our physical reality is an illusion. We are all connected. We and everything, everyone, we see around us stems from one consciousness. And we must begin to live from this reality in order to evolve. Furthermore, our very survival as a species depends upon this evolution. I believe once a critical mass of people wakes up to this, the shift will be unstoppable.
The current reality is that the same information is now coming from both spiritual and scientific disciplines across all world cultures in all walks of life. It’s coming at, and to, millions of people regardless of creed, color, race, or nation – and will come at you – from multiple angles whether religious, academic, scientific, or even entertainment. The point is unavoidable. Don’t dismiss it, run from it, or avoid it. Stay open instead. Pick a teacher and start listening and learning. The shift being explored so intensely on the Oprah discussion boards and infinite other Web sites, groups and organizations has been a long time coming. Now, it appears to be here.
Ultimately, both the decision to believe and the responsibility to understand what you’ve read here is yours and yours alone. I simply encourage you not to miss what is an unprecedented learning opportunity. A sea change is underway, so along with millions of others, I invite you to awaken to the possibilities of a conscious future.
